PhD Speakers
My name is Rudi, I am currently in the 3rd year of my PhD in the Lab of Dagmar Wachten at the Institute of Innate Immunity on the Venusberg campus. I earned my bachelor’s degree in biology at the Friedrich-Alexander-University in Erlangen, followed by a Master's in Immunology, where I focused on various medical-science fields such as cancer immunology and virology. During an eight-month break from university, I had the opportunity to work at Roche, a biopharmaceutical company. In April of 2022, I commenced my PhD studies here in Bonn. From the very beginning, I felt the strong, supportive, and enjoyable community within our cluster. This motivated me to take on the role as PhD speaker for our community last year. I am proud to have had the chance to serve in this role, organizing the PhD summer symposium, making new friends, reconnecting with old ones and exploring new bars and pubs with you all. I have especially fond memories of our PhD get-togethers, and I hope I can serve as your speaker again and have another amazing year with all of you together.
Hi, I’m Denise, your new candidate for PhD representative this year! I am a second year PhD student in Tobias Bald’s lab at the BMZ I and work with tumors and NK cells. In 2020, during peak COVID times, I moved from Stuttgart to Bonn to start my Master’s in Medical Immunosciences and Infection and I really liked it here, so I chose to stay for my PhD. Whenever I am not in the lab I like to go out for activities or drinks with friends and I enjoy some occasional gaming and reading.
As a PhD representative I want to organize more fun events and networking opportunities for PhD students within the Cluster, but also at the University in general. Mental health in academia is also an important topic for me, so I am taking part in the Mental Health First Aid Initiative of the Cluster and I want to make sure that fellow PhD students have a person to talk to and access to help and resources. I always enjoy meeting new people and I would be very happy to organize future events for you and be your contact person at the Cluster!

Do not miss the next PhD Gathering!
As PhD speakers we organize Gatherings on a regular basis. You get the information via our Slack channel, via email and via flyers in your institute. Everyone is welcome to join the gatherings and depending on the weather we go for beer gardens, pubs, karaoke,… and we are open to other suggestions from you! The events are always very popular and funny and it is an amazing chance to get to know people from your institute but also to get in touch with new people. We believe this is a great opportunity to build a social and scientific network.
